Day Three of My 72-Hour Water Fast
I have not eaten this year.
That is not an exaggeration, it's literally true.
I am currently in a 72-hour water fast. No food. Just water.
On days like this, I am grateful when they fall on rest days.
Because this is not easy.
Last month, I was at the Nas Summit.
Two full days, plus an afterparty on the second night.
There was singing. There was eating. There was drinking.
I sang. I did not eat nor drink.
Every drink offered, I declined. Water only.
Most people were courteous and, in the spirit of fun, a few tried to push.
But I held my ground and politely declined.
The next day, I went back to work.
And I kid you not, I had never experienced such low brain activity in my life.
My mind felt empty. After 1 task that was completed in the morning, my brain went "nope" and stopped.
I could literally do nothing. I learned that, at my age, I can't force my will when everything inside refuses to budge.
It was fascinating in a strange way.
I could feel my brain output absolutely nothing.
But that was last year.
It is now 2026.
And I am on day three.
Friends and colleagues ask how I do this.
The truth is, this did not start here.
I looooove food.
Denying cravings is not natural to me.
In the early stages, I started with keto.
I thought I could sustain it but after a while, I realised that it made me constantly on edge.
Like, the littlest things would annoy and trigger me.
That wasn't sustainable, in my opinion, so I searched.
Then I experimented with intermittent fasting.
When I first tried it, something surprised me.
Since I decided my eating window will be after 6pm, instead of eating lunch at work, I went for walks.
Those random walks around my workplace felt fulfilling because I could clock about 3-4km each time.
When I circled back to the office, I felt more alert than I expected.
So I stayed with it.
Another unexpected joy? Breaking fasts.
Every meal tastes incredible when you have earned it.
I made a decision.
To prepare for Easter 2026, I would combine intermittent fasting with a 72-hour water fast.
Every first three days of the month. Starting September 2025.
I have not missed one. In between, I eat only after 6pm with the intermittent fasting.
I chose this timing because I prefer eating with family and loved ones.
There were many moments of temptation.
Social settings. Late nights. Good food. But I knew that momentum is fragile, and breaking it felt riskier than saying no.
Truthfully, this has been hard. Long stretches of denying myself things I enjoy.
And yes, when I shared about learned helplessness recently, this played a part. My system was already under strain. So motivation dipped further.
Still, I kept going.
Now, I have a few months left before Easter.
And I have drawn up a simple plan for 2026.
Nothing ambitious. Nothing crazy.
Just gentle progression.
And intentional movement.
Another reminder to myself.
To #KeepTryingUntil.
And I'm really looking forward to my 1st meal tonight!
